Image Studio

Generate a single image outside a story — with your style, rules and up to two people or props as references so they stay recognisable.

Updated 23 October 2026

What it does

Image Studio makes one image at a time, independent of any story: a thumbnail idea, a poster, a scene for a short, a portrait of a character. You choose the format, the look and up to two references, describe the shot and generate. Scene images for a story are made in the story's Images step instead.

Make an image

  1. Aspect Ratio — 1:1, 16:9, 9:16, 4:3 or 3:4.
  2. Engine, Style & Rules
    • Image Engine — the AI model that paints the image.
    • Style prompt — the look, e.g. cinematic, watercolour or archive photo. Default still uses a style.
    • Rules (optional) — fixed instructions for every image, e.g. "no text in the image".
    • Your own styles and rules come from the Prompt Library.
  3. References (up to 2) — people or things that must look the same as before. Switch between Faces (Face Studio), Avatars (Avatar Studio) and Storyboard (characters and props from your stories), filter by name and click to pick. The picked ones show as Reference 1 and 2; click one again to remove it.
  4. Your Own Photo (optional, in addition to the two) — a photo the image should build on.
  5. Describe the Image — what should be in it, e.g. "A lone lighthouse on a cliff at sunset, dramatic clouds, cinematic lighting".
  6. Generate — the image appears on the right. Download saves it.

The page shows the latest image only — download the ones you want to keep before you generate the next.

Prompt codes (OpenAI engines)

With an OpenAI image engine, Code category and Code offer ready-made effects — the same list as in a story's Images step. Apply puts the effect onto the current preview if there is one, otherwise onto your own photo, otherwise it adds it to the description.

Writing a good description

  • Say what is in the picture, where, and in what light: subject → setting → mood → camera.
  • Refer to references by what they are ("the man from reference 1 sits at the bar") rather than describing their face again.
  • Leave the look to the style prompt — describe the content, not "watercolour" again.
  • Short and concrete beats long and vague.

When something goes wrong

  • Generate stays grey — the description is empty.
  • The person doesn't look like the reference — use a clearer, frontal reference, pick at most two, and mention them in the description.
  • "Generation failed" — the message says why; often the engine refused the description. Rephrase it or try another engine.
  • No references to pick — create faces in Face Studio, avatars in Avatar Studio, or characters in a story's References panel.
